Kangaroo Maths ... putting the bounce back into teaching!

 Assessing Pupils' Progress
So. What's this APP malarkey all about? In an attempt to answer that question, we have put togther a range of resources to support its development - from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 3. Many thanks to the people who have contributed here, especially the Gloucestershire Maths Advisory Team. Unless otherwise stated, that's where it came from.

    Getting Started

Well it's rather difficult to know where to begin, so let's start with some Frequently Asked Questions based on, erm, some frequently asked questions. Also in this section, 'Ways of Assessment' shows how APP underpins the whole assessment process, and is kindly provided by the South Gloucestershire Maths Advisory Team. The assessment policy in our very own Mathematics Handbook has been rewritten to reflect APP, and to help with the ongoing development of APP you might like to take a look at this self-evaluation tool.

    Levelopaedia

If you've had a look through the above FAQs, you'll notice that a possible first step is to consider the process of standardisation; i.e. how well do we all understand the assessment criteria on the 'A3 grid'? To help with this, the levelopaedias provide exemplifications and probing questions for each of the assessment criteria except 'Using and Applying'. (assessing within Using and Applying depends on a observation of process rather than output - that's why it's not included).

This resource has been produced by the Gloucestershire Maths Advisory Team, and combines elements of primary and secondary APP with new material based on ATM question stems. Now updated (17.05.09) with new probing questions at Levels 4, 5 and 6.

    e-profile

The eagerly awaited version 3 is now updated with the nationally agreed Level 1 criteria. It differs from the previous version in having a range of tools to support making a periodic judgement, moderation and analysis. There is also the facility to import information from a previously used version, and to carry out class changes through an import/export feature. Please note that we are unable to offer technical support with this resource - but the guidance document below answers all the frequently asked questions about it.

    Teaching Resources

And now, a huge amount of teaching resources ...

    • Level by Level Bring on the Maths. The latest package available from Kangaroo Maths provides full coverage of the assessment criteria from Levels 2 to 8. Follow the link for some sample activities.
    • ¿Convinced?. The old formal homework sheets have evolved into this package providing full coverage of the content-based APP assessment criteria from Levels 4 to 8.

In all of these the coverage described does not include 'Using and Applying'. (assessing within Using and Applying depends on a observation of process rather than output - that's why it's not included)
